This course is not presently being run but a course is envisaged to start in 2007.
 

 

THE CONSERVATION CORPS PROGRAMME

The role of the New Zealand Conservation Corps is to offer young people the opportunity to develop self-esteem, confidence and work skills through participation in conservation related activities.

Young people will have the chance to improve their physical fitness, and try new and exciting outdoor skills.

The emphasis of this course is to provide activities and experiences that are challenging, rewarding and educational.

Conservation Corps projects contribute to the conservation of New Zealand's natural environment and young people can learn the value and importance of caring for our natural and historic resources.

The programme will be both challenging and supportive

ACTIVITIES IN THE PROGRAMME INCLUDE:

Kayaking
  • Tramps to Kahurangi Lighthouse, Abel Tasman, and the Cobb Valley.
  • Tree release, pruning and planting.
  • Rock climbing and abseiling.
  • Work experience with the Department of Conservation.
  • High ropes course.
  • Rafting.
  • Sailing.
  • Caving.
  • Sea kayaking trip around Abel Tasman National Park Coast.
  • Involvement in Project Crimson.Dune regeneration
  • Work experience.
  • A variety of conservation work projects.
  • Bush craft skills.
  • NZ Mountain Safety Council Outdoor Course including NZQA First Aid Units.
  • Horticulture Skills.
  • Core Skills NZQA Units. Life skills for personal and group situations and for employment will be part of this programme.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR CONSERVATION CORPS?

Are you interested in being part of this exciting and varied programme? To find out if you are eligible for Conservation Corps, answer the following questions.

  1. Are you aged between 16 and 25 years of age and have been registered with NZES for more than 13 weeks as a Youth Action Client?
    Or
  2. Are you aged between 16 and 25, not necessarily registered unemployed and Willing to commit yourself to a full programme?
    Or
  3. Aged 15 and over with an exemption from school?
D.O.C. work

If you are aged 18 to 25 you will receive a Training Allowance. If you are aged 16 or 17 you do not qualify for a Training Allowance, but if you are receiving an Independent Youth Benefit you will continue to do so. All members may qualify for a Travel and/or Accommodation Allowance.

If you answer yes to one of these questions then you are eligible for Conservation Corps.
