Mary Ann in action

MARY ANN TAIT

I began my teaching career as a supervisor of correspondence typing at the local high school, and moved on to become teacher in charge of ICT (Information Communication Technology), working there for 12 years.

For the next three years I ran my own small business as a one-to-one computer tutor for the community and resource teacher for local schools. I have also taught computer skills adult education classes for about five years.

My job at the Workcentre is to facilitate the computing courses, currently we offer a one year course, timed to run in conjunction with the school terms (with an optional extra 12 week module in the following year to allow students to complete NZQA National Certificate in Computing (level 4). The national certificates offered include:
  • NZQA National Certificate in Computing (level 2)
  • NZQA National Certificate in Computing (level 3)
  • NZQA National Certificate in Computing (level 4)
  • National Certificate in Educational Achievement Level 2
  • National Certificate in Educational Achievement Level 3
I also carry out some regular basic maintenance work and am available on call for minor troubleshooting problems and general computing advice.
I really enjoy working with people and computers, especially if it means empowering my students to get the best out of their computers. Being able to work with small groups (7 students at a time) through the Workcentre is particularly enjoyable and allows me to spend lots of quality time with my students.

The friendly, team-oriented environment at the Workcentre makes coming to work a pleasure, and there’s always so much going on it’s never boring. Being here really makes you feel that you are a valued part of the community.
