The Golden Bay Workcentre Trust

A Place of Opportunity

THE OFFICE

The Office

This is the nerve centre. The office is where you go when you want to find out... well, anything about anything! From five desks all aspects of the Workcentre's many activities are co-ordinated. The desks are run by Alli, Mik, Anne and Simon; with Felicity, our #34 accommodation co-ordinator and community gardens manager, working in the back office. They are assisted by Daniel and Kirstie who manage the accounting systems.

Alli Gardener

Alli Gardener Alli arrived at the Workcentre in 1994, assigned by Task Force Green as the project manager to co-ordinate the construction of some new buildings.

Her present role, ten years later, as administrator and as development overseer, is a good example of the organic way the Workcentre has tended to grow. Roles develop in accord with the abilities of individuals.

In an organisation that is non-hierarchical, Alli's role is to assign the appropriate person or place for each piece of paperwork that crosses her desk. This paperwork concerns, amongst other things...

Alli finds her greatest job satisfaction in "...other peoples successes and witnessing people making things happen for themselves".

Mik Symmons

Mik Symmons Mik has worked at the Workcentre since 1998. Initially employed to develop community volunteer projects, some of the projects are now well established, including the Takaka Hill Walkway, the Collingwood Cemetery reserve walkway .

Mik's role evolved into a wider community development role working with groups and organizations to create employment opportunities.

More recently he has undertaken a range of social research projects for both central and local government agencies . These include the Golden Bay Social report (2004) for MSD and an investigation into the extent of sub standard housing (2007 ) for HNZC.

Mik is part of the management team at the Workcentre, assisting with the development of new programmes, contract negotiations and policy development, as well as liaising closely with financial manager to monitor project budgets

“It’s a privilege to work with such an innovative and effective team making a real difference in our community.”

Daniel kirstieBulman

Daniel joined the Workcentre as finance manager in June 2006. He is in the office one day a week to negotiate contracts, set budgets, report to Trustees and maintain and develop accounting systems.

Daniel's accounting systems are implemented by Kirstie McLeod who works one day a week and ensures that everyone's wages are paid.

Anne Taylor

Anne TaylorLiving in Golden Bay for over twenty five years qualifies Anne as a local (!) and after several years of involvement with the Workcentre in a variety of administrative roles she is now the office manager, the social secretary and co-ordinator of Community Classes.

Anne gains a lot of satisfaction from being part of a supportive team that is able to enable people to "work towards realising the possibilities that come with opportunities".

Simon Shaw

Simon Shaw helps out with general office work and other miscellaneous maintenance jobs. Simon is also responsible for Youth Training.
