SHED REDPHIL THOMAS
Originally from Christchurch, with a background in visual arts, Phil came to
Golden Bay in 2000 and enrolled in the Workcentre's year long multi-media course.Fitting in well with the Workcentre's ethos, at the completion of the course he was offered a lease on the Workcentre's recently vacated workshop. Renamed "Shed Red" by Phil, he turned the workshop into a successful mechanical repairs/ general labouring/light engineering/practical advice and creative ventures enterprise which has proved itself to be an invaluable community resource. "The most satisfying part of my work", says Phil "comes from the sense of belonging to a community, having a place in it and, in being able to play a part in its growth, also enable myself to be self-employed." Phil sees the Workcentre as being an integral part of the wider community by acting as a focal point for people to become involved in activities and learning programmes..... "Opportunities are offered that would otherwise not exist."  |
