Pedro's Story
These seeds are grown on land at Kotinga on the banks of the
Anatoki River near Takaka, Golden Bay.
I garden free draining riverbed loam with an annual rainfall of 2000
mm/year with a tendency to drought conditions in summer.
The property was farmed Bio Dynamically from 1981-1991 producing
goats milk products. Fallowed 1991-1993.
1994 I established my gardens with locally grown organic seeds,
sourced from myself or the Golden Bay Community Gardens, where I am
involved with the seed bank/exchange.
I practice no dig, heavy mulch regime with no watering except
seedling transplants. In drought years I may water watermelon and
tomatoes. For ten years I have been selling surplus vegetables and
seeds to the local Organic Shop.
I was a member of a local pilot scheme for small scale Organic
Gardeners which provides local certification.
The seed
Often moving weights
A thousand times heavier than itself
In an effort to get to sunlight
To put forward a little shoot
Motivated by the urge, instinct and impulse to live
